Jan Heginbotham
Heginbotham Studio
Painting, Sculpture
Oil Paintings and Bronze & Plaster Sculptures. A medium-spanning variety of works straddle the line between realism and abstraction. An award-winning artist in public and private collections, working for over 4 decades. Light-filled, custom-built studio.
Visit artist Jan Heginbotham at her custom-built studio, which features oil paintings and bronze and plaster sculptures. Her latest paintings often incorporate sculptures as subjects. Jan has worked as a classically trained, award-winning sculptor for 35+ years and expanded her repertoire to include painting 10 years ago. Her latest work, Animated Objects, straddles the line between realism and abstraction. It includes elements that are human, animal, musical, and even architectural, such as a series referred to as Householders. Jan's influences include diverse cultures and sources such as Cycladic Greek and African carvings, Modern Art, music, dance, yoga, and nature, synthesized into an abstract personal style. After studying sculpture at the University of Maryland, she became the protege of Boris Blai (a student of Auguste Rodin) and earned an MFA in Sculpture at American University. More recently, she’s studied with painters Ann Schlesinger, Walt Bartman, and other respected area artists. Jan has shown extensively in galleries, juried shows, and museums nationally. She has also taught in many settings, including universities. Her sculptures are in public and private collections, and lately, collectors have also acquired her paintings. Jan readily welcomes visitors to her studio and looks forward to seeing you there!
The Studio was custom-designed and built in 2019. It is a separate building with great North lighting and backyard views. Previous home studios included spare bedrooms, so this open space provides an ideal environment for exploration and experimentation. You will see a range of art spanning my career, with an emphasis on more current works. Even as my style has evolved and materials have changed, there is an interconnection between the various periods. Masks are required in the studio for everyone's safety. If you forget to bring yours, I will have some available. If you are ill or unavailable during the Open Studio, feel free to contact me for a private appointment at another time. Handicapped accessible mostly, there is one step to enter. Located behind the carport. Open Saturday and Sunday or by appointment, phone or e-mail.
