Kathy OwensFiber Artist
When I was young I always had a favorite hat or a pair of mittens that I loved to wear because my mother made them with tender loving care. I still love hand-made hats and mittens, though now, I design and knit them myself. I love the feel of yarn through my fingers and the simple act of creating my own unique fabric with needles and yarn. There is wonder associated with the act of taking a ball of yarn with needles and hand-making something that will be appreciated for it’s simple beauty and cherished for years to come. I am spinning some of my own fiber too, both for the simple pleasure it brings me and to learn more about the fibers I love to knit with. The key to a good design has a lot to do with being informed about a fiber’s best characteristics which helps to guide my decisions regarding the right and wrong types of style, stitch pattern, and type of clothing or accessory to create. I prefer to work with natural fibers, such as plant-based cottons and linens, and animal-based alpacas, cashmere and wools, to name only a few. My desire to work with these high-quality, luxury fibers, along with my creative instinct for classic design allow me to construct stylish pieces that are timeless.
